Recommendations to the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal

Thursday, October 29, 2015

PEI Coalition for Women in Government recognizes Proportional Representation as a best practice for electing women. We are a member of the Coalition for Proportional Representation established earlier this year and will echo their recommendations.

In October 2015, the PEI Coalition for Women in Government submitted a paper to the Legislative Assembly of PEI - Special Committee on Damocratic Renewal, with following recommendations:

  • that the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal request that a gender and diversity lens be applied to the electoral renewal process moving forward.
  • that the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal request that a gender and diversity lens be applied to preferential balloting as a tool for either first-past-the-post or proportional representation electoral systems.
  • that the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal request that the Government form a Citizens' Assembly as one way for government and citizens to consider a way forward for electoral reform.
  • that the Special Committee on Democratic Renewal request that Government work together with all political parties and the electorate to explore and implement Proportional Representation for Prince Edward Island.
